Acting Staff Sergeant Isobel Anderson and Sergeant Cori Slaughter ignited the Women in Law initiative after hearing about the Habitat for Humanity-NCR Women Build. They were inspired and excited to represent women in law in a community based partnership.

Thanks to the Women In Law, the Pettapiece family now has a home they can call their own.

OPPI & Pidgeon House

In the summer of 2006 we were happy to return to Pinecrest, the site of our 2005 build, which saw two houses go up. Summer 2006, as we return to Pinecrest we will be building two more homes for two very happy families, each with 4 kids! The build began in July.

Pidgeon HouseA wonderfully generous woman by the name of Mrs. Pidgeon is the major house sponsor for the first house and the Eastern District of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute is the major house sponsor for the second house! This home would not be possible without the help of hundreds of volunteers and support from our sponsors!

Fast Facts

  • In 2005, Habitat for Humanity built a two-storey double semi-detached at 859-861 Pinecrest in west-end Ottawa sponsored by the local RCMP association.
  • This year we're building a second two-storey double, semi-detached home on the adjoining lot. Each unit has a full basement and about 1200 square feet of living area.
  • The Eastern District of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) is the major sponsor of one of the homes having raised $75,000 in a two-year campaign that included a Gala evening at the Canadian War Museum last fall.
  • The other home is sponsored with a generous donation from a Habitat donor, Mrs. Pidgeon.

Mountie House

Mounite House logoThe Habitat for Humanity/RCMP Mountie House was a unique community-based partnership between the RCMP employees association and Habitat for Humanity-National Capital Region. Built in the summer of 2005, Mountie House was an excellent example of how diverse grass-roots groups can come together to help improve the health and safety of our community, one family at a time.

The house was built for a family of seven! Mom, Roxanne and dad, Kevin could not have been happier to have a permanent home for their 5 children. In a thank you letter written by Roxanne to the sponsors, volunteers and staff, she said,

"As I am writing this letter today, tears come to my eyes, as this has been the most unbelievable gift we have been given. Everyday Kevin and I look out our window and cannot believe this is ours. The staff, volunteers and sponsors that helped on the build of our new house will forever be a very important part of our lives. We are very grateful to all who have made this dream come true for us."

The Ottawa Habitat for Humanity Mountie House was the first of its kind in Canada. The Mountie Association of Ottawa has since issued a challenge to other Mounted Police Associations and Habitat Affiliates across the country and hope to establish momentum for continuing builds in other communities across Canada. This Mountie House affiliation is exceptional because it's not just about sponsorship, it's about believing in a simple formula of cooperation and shared responsibility to collaborate to help improve communities, and impact people's lives. It is also an integral part of the RCMP Employees commitment to "safe homes and safe communities".

An initiative like Mountie House was an amazing 2 year collaborative community effort by sponsors who donated their time, money and material and volunteers who donated their hearts and hammers to help families who need a hand up.

Ed Schreyer Work Project
"We make a positive impact on peoples housing, lives and the community."

In Ottawa, from August 9-16, 2002, Habitat for Humanity-National Capital Region (HFH-NCR), built 10 homes in 6 days, breaking the cycle of poverty for 10 families!

Patrons of Habitat for Humanity Canada are former Governor-General, The Rt. Hon. Ed Schreyer and his wife Lily, who once again volunteered to roll up their sleeves and donate their time and talent to help with the 8th Annual Canadian housing blitz.

Ed and Lily Schreyer's association with Habitat for Humanity began in 1993 when he was recruited at the Jimmy Carter Work Project running in both Kitchener, Ontario and Winnipeg, Manitoba. The following year the Schreyer family's commitment to Habitat for Humanity began with a new initiative, the "Homes Across Canada Tour" which continued through 1995 and 1996. Additionally, 1996 marked the participation of the Schreyer family in the Jimmy Carter Work Project in Budapest, Hungary. In 1997, the first of the Ed Schreyer Work Projects was launched in St John's Newfoundland. In subsequent years, Ed Schreyer Work Projects have been successfully completed in Regina (1998), Halifax-Dartmouth (1999), Windsor (2000), and Winnipeg (2001).

Habitat-NCR is thrilled and proud of the successes achieved through the Ed Schreyer Work Project!
